Hugh has been a passionate photographer since acquiring his first
camera at age 16 years. Originally he spent time wading through
swamps photographing birds but soon began stalking plants.
In more recent years, he has specialized in producing images of
rainforest plants in flower and fruit. He has travelled widely
throughout Australia and the world, exploring in particular the
botanical connections between southern hemisphere lands from the
ancient Gondwanan landmass.
His photographs have appeared in many
academic and popular books and magazines published in Australia,
Japan, Germany, England and the USA. Apart from producing
the photographs for his own six books, Australian Rainforest
Plants I-VI, he has provided plant identification photos for
the four volumes of the Flora of New South Wales and the
CD-ROM The Families of Flowering Plants in Australia. His
photographs have been used by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and
the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, Leiden in their Interactive
Key to Malesian Seed Plants.
Hugh has an extensive library of photographs
of plant species, vegetation communities and landscapes from
Australia and overseas, ranging from extreme close-ups to aerial
photos. His photography of plants concentrates on illustrating
all the features essential for identification, whilst emphasising
the innate beauty of the plant.
Photographs are available either as slides, prints or as digital images.
